  • European Nickel, the mining group, reported widened full-year losses of £6.1 million, from £3 million last time, but said it was close to beginning production of nickel and bringing in revenues.

     

  • Placer Dome, the gold miner, has agreed to a takeover approach from Barrick Gold, after the rival miner sweetened its offer to $10.4 billion (£6 billion). The move will make Barrick the world’s largest gold producer.
     
     

  • Royal Dutch Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil group, agreed to sell its service stations and other businesses in Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia to Petrobras, the state-owned Brazilian oil group, in a $140 million (£80.5 million) deal.

     

  • Jo Malins, the insider dealing finance director of Cambrian Mining, the AIM-listed company, has been stripped of his share option profits worth £69,000.
