AFX Europe (Focus): Australia's Woodside confirms gas find off northwest coast: “Woodside, which is about one-third owned by Shell…” (ShellNews.net) 5 April 05

SYDNEY (AFX) - Woodside Petroleum Ltd said wireline logging at its Pluto-1 exploration well in the Carnarvon Basin off Australia's northwest coast has indicated a 225-meter gas column.

Woodside, which is about one-third owned by Shell, earlier reported that the Pluto-1 exploration well in its WA-350-P permit area, had encountered a 209-m column.

It said the well is now being prepared for production testing.

The discovery lies about 110 km from the Woodside-operated North West Shelf gas project's North Rankin offshore production platform.

It lies in 976 meters of water between ChevronTexaco Inc's Wheatstone discovery and the Urania gas field discovery.

UBS, in a research note, said if Pluto is successful it could be linked to Wheatstone and in future tied back to the North West Shelf Project.

It said such a development could ultimately deliver up to four trln cubic feet of new gas for the North West Shelf project, which exports liquefied natural gas to Asian markets.
