LONDON -- The BBL Company Vof and Shell U.K. Limited, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch/Shell (RD SC) said Tuesday they have signed contracts to start building a natural gas terminal at Bacton that will supply gas from the BBL pipeline to the U.K. gas network.

The terminal is owned by Shell and Esso Exploration and Production U.K., an Exxon Mobil (XOM) subsidiary. Under the terms of the contract, Shell will be responsible for building and managing the facility.

The BBL company, owned by Gasunie Technology & Assets, E.On Ruhrgas (RUH.YY) and Fluxys (FLUX.BT) will operate the 235-kilometer, 36 inch BBL pipeline that will run under the North Sea between Balgzand on the Dutch coast and Bacton on the U.K.'s North Norfolk coast.

The pipeline will be completed by the end of 2006 and is expected to supply up to 13% of the U.K.'s gas demand.

The pipeline will be connected to the Shell Terminal between September 2005 and October 2006.
