Ireland On-Line: Minister: Shell to continue dismantling part of Corrib pipeline: Posted Saturday 29 October 2005
The Minister for Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey has said Shell are to be permitted to continue work on dismantling part of the Corrib gas pipeline.
Mr Dempsey said that his original order to the company to cut the pipeline should stand.
Earlier this month, the local Pro Erris Gas Group asked the Minister to order the suspension of the work until the safety review of the pipe-line was complete.
Mr Dempsey said he would consider the request and also ask Shell for their views. as well as getting legal advice on the matter.
The Minister now says that, although Shell agreed to suspend the work on that section of the pipe, there was no legal impediment on him changing his original order, so he would not do so.
He said he made his decision in order to preserve the integrity of the regulatory regime that his directions should be adhered to.
