  • Talks between Royal Dutch Shell, the oil major, and unions to resolve a strike at the Pernis refinery in Rotterdam are to continue, according to unions.
  • Venture Production, the Aberdeen energy company, has bought the undeveloped Ensign gas discovery in the southern North Sea from Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil and Centrica for up to £13.3 million.
     
     

  • Shares in UK Coal fell 7 per cent after a consortium headed by Alchemy Partners, the finance group, abandoned its plans for a £240 million takeover bid.

     

  • Anglo American, the diversified mining giant, will spend $43 million (£24 million) to expand the Namakwa heavy mineral sands and smelting facilities in South Africa.

     

  • Urals Energy, which listed on London’s Alternative Investment Market in August, paid $70 million for the production and exploration assets in Russia’s Komi region, which it said would boost its output by 50 per cent.
