WARNING letters were delivered yesterday by Shell E&P Ireland to a small number of landowners denying company staff access to lands designated for gas pipeline.

Some landowners have failed to reach agreement over access and compensation arrangements.

The registered letters require objectors to provide written assurances within seven days that they will not interfere with preparatory works for the Corrib pipeline in Rossport, Co Mayo.

Shell staff and contractors withdrew from fencing duties last week and have not returned since.

A company spokesman said: "We cannot allow a situation where any persons are at risk and this is why we have had to stop work on the land concerned."

The company is now threatening to seek a court injunction.
