Times of India: Seven Indians win Shell scholarships (ShellNews.net)

BANGALORE: Indian students have bagged seven of the 86 Shell Centenary Scholarships, available for 40 countries, for the year 2004-05.
The winners from colleges in the South are: A. Srilakshmi Arcot (Bangalore); Najeeb Mohammadali Kuzhiyil (Mangalore); Ragavendra Prasad Balegedde and Madan Kumar Lakshmanan (Chennai).
The one-year scholarship is for deserving students across the world, and offered in association with leading universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, Durham, Leeds, Imperial College, London, University College, London, University of Twente, Netherlands and TU Delft, Netherlands.
Srilakshmi, an environmental engineer, will pursue her ambition of becoming a researcher in sustainable development with a Masters course at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Najeeb, a technical services engineer with the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, will join the University of Leeds, UK, for Masters in combustion and energy.
Ragavendra, currently working with Carborundum Universal Ltd as a project trainee, will follow his ambition of becoming a chemical engineering scientist with a Masters course from the University of Twente, Netherlands.
Madan, a researcher and project leader with the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, will undergo Masters in telecommunications engineering from the TU Delft, Netherlands.
The other three winners are Mahesh Pandey (Gurgaon), Ritu Kanotra (Delhi) and Ramya Srinivasan (Netherlands).
Announcing the winners, Shailaja Sharma, manager - external affairs, Shell India said, "Shell scholarship winners are from diverse disciplines, ranging from engineering and telecommunication to transport, business management and sustainable development. The scholarships will help them pursue their dreams and develop an international perspective on the topics of their choice and to return eventually as leading professionals."
The number of Shell scholarships given to Indian students has now reached a total of 31.
The Shell Centenary/Chevening Scholarships scheme offers students from the developing countries, an opportunity to study in the UK and Netherlands for a Masters degree and gain skills that will make a long-term contribution for the further development of their countries.
