ConocoPhillips, the US oil giant, said it would consider increasing its holding in Lukoil, the Russian energy company, to 20 per cent. ConocoPhillips paid $2 billion (£1.1 billion) for a 7.6 per cent stake.

Royal Dutch/Shell said it was considering developing a gas field in the Barents Sea in a joint liquefied natural gas project with Gazprom, the Russian gas giant.
