SYDNEY (AFX) - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, majority owned by Royal Dutch Shell, said it has signed a two-year memorandum of cooperation with the Iraq Oil Ministry to evaluate potential oil and gas projects in the Kurdistan region in the north of the country.
In a statement, Woodside said it will undertake a joint six-month study under the agreement to identify viable oil and gas projects in the region, with most of the work to be done from the West Australian city of Perth.
'This is an initial step to work with the Iraqi Oil Minister and Government to more fully understand the potential risks, rewards and benefits of investing in Iraq's oil and gas sector,' Woodside chief Don Voelte said.
Under the deal, Woodside will train several Iraq Oil Ministry personnel in Perth and will also sponsor a number of science and engineering students to study at Perth's Curtin University of Technology.
