MR DAVID VARNEY ("Napoleon") - THE FLAWED NEW HEAD OF COMBINED UK CUSTOMS & EXCISE AND INLAND REVENUE SERVICE
Nicknamed "Napoleon" whist at Shell, Mr Varney has recently been appointed as the first boss of the combined UK Customs & Excise Department and the UK Inland Revenue. I am in possession of documents and tape recordings which prove (to use the term favoured by Lord Oxburgh) that Mr Varney has, in my experience, been "economical with information".
He made categorical statements in a letter to my son which later turned out to be materially untrue. This does not inspire confidence in him in handling his new hugely powerful and important role.
