Royal Dutch/Shell, the oil group, said last night it had launched an investigation into allegations that seven people were shot dead by the Nigerian army during a protest on an oil rig rented by the company.
Shell, which initially said it had no evidence anyone had died in the incident, said it was "concerned" by media reports of the accusations made by local people in the town of Ojobo in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
