The price for light crude on Monday came close to US$ 50 a barrel.

The reason is unrest in the oil-producing nations Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, according to analysts.

In New York, the price for crude light reached a record US$ 49.52 a barrel on Monday. In London the cost of North Sea oil set a new record of US$ 46.25 a barrel.

This means that the price for North Sea oil increased by 92 cents a barrel since before the weekend.

Before the weekend, Shell evacuated 225 workers from its pumping stations Soku and Ekulama in Nigeria, because of the danger of clashes between government soliders and armed militants in the region.

Nigeria is OPEC's fifth largest producer of oil.
