PRNewswire: Corporate Generosity Provides Family First Christmas in New Home: “"The generosity shown by Shell and Motiva employees has overwhelmed Janie and Nelda," said Houston Habitat President Laurence J. Payne.” (ShellNews.net) 16 Dec 04
HOUSTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- For the past 13 years, Nelda and Janie Moore have spent the holidays bundled together in one frigid bedroom shared by the two sisters and Janie's 15-year-old daughter Gina. But, for the first
time ever, the Moores will decorate their Christmas tree surrounded by the warmth and comfort of central heat without the challenges of living in substandard housing, thanks to the generosity of Shell Oil Company and its affiliate, Motiva Enterprises LLC.
At 3 p.m. on Thursday, volunteers from Shell and Motiva's Finance Community will officially welcome the Moore family to their new Houston Habitat for Humanity home in northeast Houston with a dedication celebration.
In addition to providing $50,000 to purchase land and building materials, about 200 volunteers from the two companies' finance groups donated more than 1,000 hours of labor to construct the Energy Star-certified house.
Additionally, employees from the two Houston-based companies have collected furnishings for the new home and, on Thursday, will present handmade quilts to welcome the first-time homebuyer family.
"The generosity shown by Shell and Motiva employees has overwhelmed Janie and Nelda," said Houston Habitat President Laurence J. Payne. "Their continued commitment to provide hard working, low-income families with the opportunity to purchase homes they can afford is an outstanding example of how Houston's corporate community takes leadership in shaping Houston's outlook and providing solid footing for future generations."
This is the fourth Houston Habitat project sponsored by Shell and its affiliates since 1998. "Shell has always been and will continue to be an active corporate citizen, involved in our communities," said Guy Cowan, vice president finance and chief financial officer of Shell Oil Company. "The Shell family is pleased to have helped the Moore family, and applauds the
superb work that Houston Habitat is doing in building a stronger community."
The Moores, like all Houston Habitat for Humanity homebuyers, are purchasing their home at cost and with a zero interest loan. Additionally, they have contributed over 300 sweat equity hours working to build their own home, as well as the homes of their neighbors.
