SHELL Malaysia expects the rollout of credit card payment system
using the chip card at its stations to be completed by next year, said
chairman Datuk Jon Chadwick.
“We are introducing chip card payment at the stations to reduce
credit card fraud. So, it's again making things more convenient for our
customers,” Chadwick told reporters after the launch of the company’s
2006 Corporate Calendar in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
“This means giving better quality service, because not everyone
wants to hang around a petrol station for a long time. So if they can
swipe a card (instead of paying cash at the counter), that's something
they will prefer.”
The company was also looking at building more retail outlets in
the country, possibly 10 new stations, but Chadwick said that the figure
depended on the opportunities available.
“I think, across the country, the total will hover around 825
outlets next year, including a number of super-sites. These are large
stations with convenience stores and many pumps,” he said.
Each station is expected to cost between RM10mil and RM15mil, and
will be located in areas where there is demand for such stations.
An upgrade of the company’s existing retail network is also in the
works. Shell is planning to provide better security, better lighting,
more convenience stores. It is also looking at installing more pumps at
some stations.

For the coming year, Chadwick said although the company was always on
the lookout for profitable downstream opportunities, the main focus was
on upstream activities.
Asked if the company would be doing any exploration in the coming
year, he said: “We've had a very successful year. Yes, we will be doing
exploration next year. We need reserves. Any oil company needs oil to
continue with the long-term.”
Shell’s 2006 Corporate Calendar is a wall calendar that features
six prints depicting seeds of well-known rainforest species in
Malaysia.
This year’s calendar is themed “Seeds of Life: The Sustainable
Future of Our Rainforests.”
The calendar was produced in partnership with the Forest Research
Institute of Malaysia. It is aimed at increasing public awareness on
conservation and sustainable management of Malaysia’s 150
million-year-old tropical rainforest.
