Dr. John Huong

 

Royal Dutch Shell "Whistleblower", Dr John Huong: born on 8th January 1957, Dr. John Huong Yiu Tuong, a Malaysian geologist, worked for the oil giant Shell for over 29 years. Dr Huong was educated in Malaysia. He subsequently gained a Ph.D. in Human Resources and Management, from Warnborough College, Oxford in 1997. Among other qualifications, he holds two MBA’s, a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing and a Certificate in Geology from the British Institute of Engineering Technology, Singapore.

 

Dr Huong was employed by Shell in various functions as a micro-paleontologist, a petrographer, a sedimentologist, a stratigrapher, a production geologist and an asset integrity engineer. He worked on Shell projects in Malaysia including joint ventures with PETRONAS), in Russia and…   He is the author of many technical publications relating to....

 

Dr Huong is currently being sued for defamation collectively, by eight multinational companies within the Royal Dutch Shell Group. The plaintiff Shell companies issued legal proceedings in June 2004 alleging that Dr Huong has posted defamatory allegations on  “gripe” websites owned by a long time critic of Shell, 89 year old former Shell marketing consultant, Alfred Donovan. The proceedings have involved restraining orders and interim injunctions. The Shell litigation is directed solely against Dr Huong and has also included a "Notice to Show Cause" and "contempt of court" proceedings punishable by imprisonment.

 

The articles which are the subject of the litigation relate to issues Dr Huong raised internally at Shell regarding Health and Safety matters. Dr Huong claims that his actions were conscience driven in accordance with Shell's ethical code: the Statement of General Business Principles.
