Kota Kinabalu: Profitability and high returns to stakeholders are among the distinguishing characteristics of high performing companies but results alone are insufficient to maintain a high performance culture, said Chairman of Shell Companies in Malaysia Datuk Jon Chadwick.
How results are achieved through the human capital development, especially a pool of leaders or executives within a company, is another crucial factor to maintaining a high performance culture, he said.
"Leadership at every level in organisation matters in shaping its culture and companies should invest in developing leaders and grooming future talents," he said.
Among the traits that should be instilled to groom potential leaders in high performing companies are shared vision, focus on priorities and having external mindset for customers, governments and key stakeholders, said Chadwick.
They should also be accountable for their actions by having the drive to grasp opportunities, discipline in performing their duty and ability to address failures as well as fully utilise the right person with the right skill within a team to achieve a task, he added.
Referring to Shell's experience, Chadwick said the company identified future talents at the early stages and practiced job rotation involving the posting of their workforce to 143 countries where it operates, to give them the necessary skills and exposure.
He said he himself had been posted to several posts around the world since he joined the giant oil company.
The system really works in maintaining the high performing results and culture of Shell, he added.
