About one thousand students from Nigerian universities and host communities will be awarded the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria scholarships for the entire duration of their courses.
The Shell university scholarship scheme is part of the company's contribution towards the educational development of the nation. Every year more than 3000 Nigerian undergraduates write aptitude tests to join the ever- growing list of students which Shell supports in Nigerian universities.
A statement from Mr. Abinbola Olusesan a media consultant of the company said the awards are in four categories namely, the National Merit Award for candidates with the best scores in the aptitude test irrespective of their states of origin, the State Merit Award for the three highest scoring candidates from each state of the federation and the Oil Producing Communities awards which are in two divisions for indigenes of Shell Host communities.
The Shell Scholarship Scheme was inaugurated in 1952 as part of efforts of Shell to promote academic excellence and manpower development in Nigeria and scheme also supports thirteen thousand secondary and two thousand university students at any time of the year. "It is just part of a total package of social investment which averages about $40 million annually covering education, vocational training, agriculture, health and sanitation as well as infrastructural development in the Niger Delta", the statement concluded.
