The Lawyer: Lord Woolf joins Blackstone “…the same day as esteemed former IP judge Sir Hugh Laddie joining law firm Willoughby & partners to head its arbitration and mediation service.”: Tuesday 4 October 2005

Lord Woolf, the retiring Lord Chief Justice, has joined Blackstone Chambers as a non-resident mediator and arbitrator. Woolf retired from his five-year tenure as Lord Chief Justice on Friday (30 September) and became a Blackstone tenant immediately. He joins Blackstone’s existing mediators, Presiley Baxendale QC, Sir David Edward QC, Robert Englehart QC and Charles Flint QC.

As reported last month (20 September) Woolf has also become an advisor and consultant to the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR).

Woolf was called to the Bar in 1955 and was appointed to the Bench in 1979. He became a Court of Appeal judge in 1986, and a Law Lord in 1992. He was Master of the Rolls between 1996 and 2000 before being made Lord Chief Justice.

The news follows yesterday’s announcement by Essex Court Chambers that Lord Steyn, who has retired from the House of Lords, is joining the set to practice international arbitration, which came on the same day as esteemed former IP judge Sir Hugh Laddie joining law firm Willoughby & partners to head its arbitration and mediation service.
