CHAPTER 2: Impacts in California
California is one of the prospective markets for the LNG that is produced from Sakhalin. To read more about the impacts that Sakhalin gas will have on California, and what Californians can do about it, click here.
BOX 2:
Liquid Natural Gas: Not In Anyone's Backyard
http://www.pacificenvironment.org/lng/intro.htm
For the first time in history, California is considering importing Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) to meet what the energy industry is claiming to be a looming energy shortfall. LNG is natural gas that is extracted abroad and chilled to a temperature of -260 degrees Fahrenheit to liquefy. It is loaded onto huge tankers, and brought overseas to import terminals now being proposed along the California and Baja, Mexico coast. Under the proposed plans, the gas would then be "re-gassified," and would be used to generate electricity for the California energy grid.
One of the sources of natural gas would be Sakhalin Island, Russia, where we have been actively supporting grassroots efforts to hold Shell and ExxonMobil to the highest environmental standards in their projects there. In December, 2003, Pacific Environment co-founded Ratepayers for Affordable, Clean Energy (RACE) with other organizations concerned with the dangerous impacts of the LNG import plan.
