BBC NEWS: Technician dies on offshore rig (Shell’s Sole Pit Clipper platform complex): Saturday 12 November 2005

A 59-year-old man has died on a rig off the Norfolk coast.

David Soanes, who worked for Amec, was found lying at the bottom of a flight of stairs on the Clipper offshore platform in the southern North Sea.

Mr Soanes, from Suffolk, died on the rig shortly after being found on Friday morning. He had worked for Amec as a mechanical technician for 12 years.

Norfolk Police are investigating his death. A health and safety investigation is also under way.

Three years ago, a helicopter crashed after taking off from the Clipper platform, killing all 11 on board.

The rig is located 45 miles from the Norfolk coast.
