DOHA: The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies (Shell) on Sunday signed a 10-year lease agreement with the Qatar Foundation to set up a training and research facility at the Science and Technology Park which is scheduled to open at the Education City in early 2006.

 

The agreement was signed by Dr Abdulla Al Kubaisi, member of QF's board of directors and Linda Cook, Executive Director, Gas&Power, Royal Dutch/Shell Group Companies, who represented Qatar Shell Services Company, after a meeting by H H Sheikha Mouzah bint Nasser Al Missned, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry and Jeroen van der Veer, Chief Executive, Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies, .

 

Shell plans to spend up to $100m over a period of 10 years for its future facility at the Science and Technology Park which has been named Qatar Shell Research and Training Centre.

 

The Centre, which is expected to start operation in early 2006, will initially focus on Upstream and Gas to Liquids (GTL) technologies, technical services and a related training centre.

 

The signing ceremony, held at the Qatar Foundation headquarters, was also attended by Dr Eulian Roberts, project director, Science and Technology Park and Robert Daker, General Manager, Qatar Shell Services company, among others.

 

Shell lauded

 

"The signing of this agreement and the announcement of Shell's programmes mark two significant milestones in the development of Qatar Foundation's Science and Technology Park," said Sheikha Mouzah.

 

"I am pleased with Shell's strong commitment to the development and transfer of technologies in Qatar and am confident that our partnership with Shell will contribute to the development of significant new technologies in energy field at the Science and Technology Park, which will help Qatar to become a knowledge leader in the oil and gas industry," she added.

 

Jeroen van der Veer said, "Shell is committed to the development of Science and Technology Park and we expect this facility to become one of our company's centres of excellence in the world."

 

The Science and Technology Park will provide Shell and other tenants with a high quality environment for applied research, including laboratory space, technology-related services and support programmes for commercialising technology. Construction of the facility started in December last year.

 

The tenants will also enjoy the benefits of one of Qatar's first free-trade zones and close links with world-class academic resources located at Education City.

 

Shell's upstream technology programme at the proposed Centre will build on the company's global knowledge and expertise in developing and producing oil and gas world-wide, said Robert Daker, while addressing the press after the signing ceremony.

 

Shell will bring a cutting-edge GTL research and development programme to Qatar focusing on catalyst testing, product development and GTL by-product research including sulphur management.

 

The activities at the centre will be complemented with technical services and a training centre to enable sharing of technology and best practices. These services will target both Shell companies and third parties in Qatar and the region, he added.
