Spanish petrochemicals group Repsol YPF yesterday received the authorisation of the European Commission to acquire Shell Gas, the Portuguese LPG division of UK oil group Shell, and merge the company with its own LPG division in Portugal, Repsol Butano.

The Commission ruled that competition in the sector in Portugal would not be seriously affected by the purchase. The operation will give Repsol Butano its own infrastructure in Portugal and thereby allow the company to compete more effectively with the LPG operations of rival groups Galp, from Portugal, and British Petroleum, from the UK, the leading two companies in the sector.
